Improvised Designs

These are the improvised bag & frog designs.

Sarah in her school uniform carrying her school bag.
*The word on the bag, Nature, can be changed accordingly*

This is the final frog that we've come up with.
We used a triangular face because it's more unique. Frog Lulu have round body and palm & feet. The animation will be interesting because the limbs are dangling, and round hands & feet is more aesthetically pleasing to the kids.
The bow is to give Lulu identity. This can allow the kids to recognise it easily.

This will also be the final art style - Coloured outline.
Feel free to give us any comments :)

Survey with the kindergartens

During the beginning of our term break, we emailed 2 kindergartens for permission to survey the kids on 13th September 2010. We successfully got the permission from the both principals.

We spent time to prepare for the kindergarten visit.

On 13th September, we brought all the things that we've prepared. We surveyed 4 - 6 years old kids. They were very cooperative and helped us to finish the survey. In the classroom, we gave the kids stickers, and asked them the questions one at a time. They will paste the sticker on the picture that they liked the most.

Star stickers: 4 - 5 years old kids
Smiley stickers: 6 years old kids

Final choice (refer below posts for more details):
Sarah - Side Fringe with 2 Low Ponytails
Daniel - Centre-parting Daniel
Colour Style - Coloured outline
Website Layout - Balloon Design
*Others are to be improvised - improvised designs will be posted on next Thursday*

Although we have come to a conclusion for the designs, we would love to hear from you too :) Feel free to give us your comments.

Sarah

Sarah, is the main character of the story. So it is important that it can capture the children's heart.

We have made Sarah looks cuter by changing a little of her face shape.

Sarah with side fringe & 2 high ponytail (22votes)

Sarah with side fringe & 2 low ponytail (29votes)

Sarah with bangs & 2 big high ponytails (18votes)

As the kids prefer Sarah with 2 low ponytails, we find that it is also reasonable as the girls at the kindergarten with long hair has 2 low ponytail. As mentioned in the previous blog update, this Sarah gives a mischievous feeling, so I think it is okay to go on with the Sarah.

Daniel

Daniel's personality:
• Loves to play electronic games & radio-control car
• Loves school
• Hates outdoor
• Has many friends
• Favourite colour is blue

Daniel is in spectacles because kids who play a lot of electronic games usually have short-sighted.

There are 2 final designs that we've brought to the kindergarten for survey.

Centre-parting Daniel (33votes)
Centre-parting makes Daniel looks neat and "nerdy".

Daniel with fringe (32votes)
Daniel with fringe & a little messy hair makes him looks playful.

Centre-parting Daniel won by 1 vote. The reason was that kids prefer neater hairstyle. We've also observed that kids in the kindergarten do not have messy fringe/hair. They are all very neat & tidy.

Therefore, our choice is the Centre-parting Daniel :)

Toy Frog

Toy frog is Sarah's favourite toy, therefore it is important that the kids will like the design.
Big Eye Frog (25votes)
The eyes of the frog are big and the frog has dangling limbs with round hands & feets. We feel that the dangling limbs can show the movement of the frog when Sarah is carrying it. Big eyes can attract the kids attention more.

Medium Eye Frog (25votes)
This frog has a medium-sized eye with a triangular face shape. The face shape is very unique. The limbs of the frog is not as thick as the other 2, and also, there is shape for the hands & feet. The most attractive part of this frog is the face shape. It makes the frog looks happy.

Small Eye Frog (24votes)
This frog has really small eyes and a big round face. The limbs are dangling but the hands & feet have shape. It has a wide smile that attract the kids.

The vote results were almost the same! However, the Small Eye Frog lost by 1 vote.

After considering, we decided to combine these 3 designs together.

Sarah's School Bag

We had came up with only 2 designs for the school bag. Initially, there were designs with only plain colours & without any pictures or cartoon. We feel that the kids will be more attracted to cartoon bags instead. We've also seen kids with cartoon bags, and not those plain boring ones.

The bags we designed were based on the shape that the kids like.
Ladybird Design (34votes)
It is in Sarah's favourite colour. The shape of the bag is to the kids liking. The ladybird compartment is the most attractive element for the bag. It does not only act as a design, it can also contain things. As Sarah loves nature, we put the ladybird design.

Cap Design (43votes)
It is also in Sarah's favourite colour. It is also the shape that kids would like. However, this design is more simple. The strap is the main attraction of the bag. It is red in colour. There is a cap picture is because this shows 'outdoor'. Sarah is a kid who loves outdoor.

We've observed that girls prefer the ladybird bag more than the cap design bag. Of course, there are still girls choosing the cap design bag. We've also realised that the kids choose the cap design bag partly is because of the strap colour is in red.

Therefore, we will be improvising by combining both ideas together. We will be improving on the ladybird bag - changing the strap colour and removing the waterbottle net on the ladybird bag.

Colour Style

We've come up with 3 different colour styles for the kids to choose from.
No Outline (Total: 27votes)

Coloured outline - a green dress will have a dark green outline etc. (Total: 25votes)

Thick outline as border and thin lines for details (Total: 14votes)

The design with no outline had the highest vote among the 3, and the second in place is the one with coloured outline.

We feel that no outline is not that attractive to the kids. And also, during the survey, we realised that the kids are too young to understand what is the meaning of "outline", therefore causing inaccurate results. Our group has discussed, and decided to choose the one with coloured outline.

So in conclusion, we will be using the 2nd colour style - coloured outline.

Website Layout Design

This is the Website Layout Design. Our group has designed 3 different layout designs - Sheep layout, frog layout and balloon layout.

Sheep layout rationale:

As Sarah love green and nature, the layout out is designed with a lot of green and with an outdoorsy feel to it. Big Sheep are used as the icons as Sarah love for nature also signifies her love for animals. The icons are made to be large as our research shows that children are attracted to large design elements.Vivid colours are also used in the layout to attract and sustain the children's attention

Sheep design (15votes)

Frog layout rationale:

Sarah's favourite stuffed animal is a frog, so we incorporated a frog into the layout. The frogs and icons are made to be large as children are attracted to larger design element, and with larger icons, the children are able to identify it easily, thus increasing the efficiency of the website.

Frog Design (22votes)

Balloon Layout rationale:

This layout is made to be colourful as children are attracted to vivid and colourful objects, this will not only capture their attention but to able to captivate them for a longer period of time. The icons for this layouts are the colourful solids. The solids will be the buttons ( words will be used show their functions ) This is a straightforward approach, so that children can know straight away that those are the buttons easily, thus making most out of the website.

Balloon design (32votes)

Our team has come to the conclusion to choose the balloon layout design. The colour are attractive to the kids - colourful & vibrant. However, we will still improvise on the design to make it look better.
